Lizzy’s Interview:
Can you share a bit about your background?
“My name is Lizzy Stamper, and I’m a soon-to-be-graduated undergraduate senior studying History of Science, Medicine, and Technology. Over my time at Hopkins, I have strove to learn about experiences other than mine. ”
What led you to join the “Race against Time” research lab/website project?
“Having the opportunity to join a project like this from its inception is a thrilling prospect. The idea of exploring race throughout history, which was discouraged in previous historiography classes, was particularly intriguing to me.”
Can you speak about your contribution to the website?
“I have made the reader’s guides for The Invention of Race in Medieval Europe by Geraldine Heng and the Persians by Aeschyles. For my final project, I am working on investigating the depiction of the Viking invasion of North America in both Sagas from the time and culture, as well as the video game of the 2018 Assassins Creed Valhalla.”
In what ways has your involvement influenced, informed, or benefited you?
“By listening to the conversations during class, I am learning so much about ancient and modern understandings of race and how to articulate this complex topic better."
What do you hope the impact of this project will be?
“I hope that students will be able to learn these concepts earlier and that, eventually, the reality of the Ancient Race will be accepted, as it has directly influenced today’s society. Through its better understanding, we might better understand, deconstruct, and repair our current inherently race-based society.”
Do you have a message for future students or users of this resource?
“I already know future students and scholars will be even more equipped to begin improving on what we started. I hope this class is simply the beginning of what is to become an extensive and rich site for discussion.”
